New kid on the block

by Cindy on January 14, 2009

The new kid on the block around my little studio is stainless steel wire.  I mentioned that I wanted to try working with new materials this year, so here’s my first step.   I’ve long admired the time-worn jewelry style of Deryn Mentock.  Her jewelry incorporates beautiful vintage pieces, “found” items, and often tell a story.  One thing that gives her work that aged look is the annealed stainless steel wire that she uses.  It looks like oxidized sterling silver, only darker.  I knew I wanted to give this wire a try, and ordered a bunch of different gauges (from a hardware store online!) last year.  Then along came this book….

A Charming Exchange by Kelly Snelling and Ruth Rae is an absolute fabulous book filled with all kinds of unusual/breathtaking jewelry projects.  What makes this book so rich is that the pieces are all collaborations amongst various artists.  The artists come from varying backgrounds such as fiber, metal-smithing or mixed media….and each add a technique or element in the process.  When I read the very first paragraph in the Intro, I knew the book was speaking to me….”It is late:  The children are finally asleep, the dog has stopped his click, click, clicking behind you, and now you are alone.  You can think.  This is when the magic starts bubbling.” Aaaah!  My husband agreed, these words describe ME (aka midnight beader).

I poured through the projects in the book, the photographs are just beautiful.  There are so many projects I’d like to try, and artists that are new for me to discover.  I decided on a particular necklace (because yes, it involved that stainless steel wire I had ready and waiting).  As I got started, I began to have a few questions about this new wire and contacted the stainless steel wire queen herself.  Deryn saved me from myself saying that working with stainless steel is a “whole different animal” than sterling.  Thinking that I could give the finished piece an extra polish, I was planning to give it a run in my tumbler.   Luckily Deryn warned me against this, noting that the steel will rust if it gets wet (but that rust could be again cleaned with sand paper)!   Also, the very feel of the wire is very different, it seems much lighter and easier to bend.

My first piece from A Charming Exchange is based on the project entitled “Nature’s Gift” by Ruth Rae, Shari Beaubien and Deryn Mentock.  Using fibers in a necklace was certainly new for me.  Here you’ll see I chose a yarn in various shades of brown.

This next necklace is also an experiment in using annealed stainless steel wire.  The etched lampwork focal is by Laurie Hyatt.  This is a super long one ~ 30″!  It is great to wear over a sweater, for those of you in the bitter cold here on the East Coast.  Alright, it may not be as cold here in VA as it is for our friends up in NY! 🙂

There you go!  More than you ever wanted to know about wire.  See, I do post about jewelry every once in a while!

Before I go, here’s a picture taken today of me and little Sweet Pea (P for his middle name).  Or you can call him “chubby cheeks” as my Dad liked to call all of my guys when they were a baby.  Sweat Pea Chubby Cheeks is already 3 months old!

101 Reasons…

by Cindy on January 9, 2009

Hi everyone

You know how one blog leads to another….it’s amazing what you can find and how much time you can spend reading blogs.  For me, I’m hooked on a few design blogs….bead artists, jewelry designers, crafters, that sort of thing.  Somehow I came upon a site called PoppyTalk.  I found a great compilation of why it’s great to buy Handmade.  Take a look, it was a collaborative effort and anyone could chime in.  Now the post is over 101 reasons and counting….

{2009} Off to a sweet start!

by Cindy on January 4, 2009

Happy New Year!

Here is my group of “boys” ringing in the new year, holding their new nutcrackers.  Yes, we let the kids stay up til midnight for the first time.  Boy were they wired and not the least bit sleepy!

The past 2 weeks were filled with lots of family time.  My parents and sister took my two older sons skiing (gotta post a picture of that!), and all the while I was able to spend time time with my brother and his family who flew in from CA.  It was so much fun to meet my new nephew who just turned 3 months old today.  Here are the two peas in a pod, cousins just 8 days apart.  Look at all that chub going on. 🙂

On Friday night we drove to Baltimore for a dinner with friends of the family who have been like family for as far back as I can remember.  It’s been a number of years since I saw most of the Parks family so it was such a nice reunion.  Between my brother’s family and mine, there were the additional 10 of us joining their large group for a fun evening of conversation and reminiscing.  Well, when I say conversation, I have to admit my poor husband never made it to the “adults” table from the “kiddie” table as my kids were rambunctious to say the least.

On the drive home, there tucked in my basket I found a package of Berger cookies.  Thank you for that sweet surprise, Helen!  Now I grew up through the years visiting my Grandmother in Baltimore, even went to college there…somehow I missed these renowned Baltimore treats.  The cookies are topped with a massive dollop of frosting, thick like fudge. Oh. my. goodness. these. are. good.  As soon as my husband took one bite, he said “Okay, you’re going to have to get on the internet to order some of these!”  It turns out they’re sold at places like the local Royal Farms or Giant store.  When I searched online, I was very pleased to find a few recipes for these cookies.  You can check out the recipes here and here…at least indulge me and check out those yummy photos!

Now speaking of the wonderful Parks family, I received a sweet surprise in the mail this past week.  Madeline sent a beautiful crocheted blanket, sweater and bonnet set for the baby.  This dear woman has sent one for each of my four sons.  And she was crocheting double time as she sent one to my brother’s baby just weeks before!  Such a wonderful keepsake.

The next day I received another sweet gift, this time from my friend Kerry up in NY.  She’s given me hints that she was up to something, making a little welcome gift for the baby. Boy was I surprised to open the box and find this beautiful crib quilt!  She used Amy Butler fabric in some of my absolute favorite colors.  She sure has a way of putting together patterns…it looks retro and modern at the same time.  Thank you, Kerry!!! 🙂

Well that’s all of the latest for now…I enjoyed sharing them with you.  Now it’s back to the grindstone….back to school tomorrow and back to our routines.  It was so good while it lasted.
