Goodbye Kindergarten, Hello 1st Grade!
by Cindy on June 12, 2010

Today was bittersweet. My Kindergartner graduated and was promoted to First Grade. Several Moms expressed feeling sad to see their little ones growing up, why can’t they stay little with chubby cheeks and big smiles? We all want to capture this place and time, and their sweet innocence. Afterall, my little guy still wants to be a bunny when he grows up!
Do you remember this popular poem from Robert Fulghum? It’s a classic and thought I’d post it here in case you’ve forgotten about it or maybe never read it before.
All I Really Need To Know I Learned In Kindergarten
by Robert Fulghum
Most of what I really need
To know about how to live
And what to do and how to be
I learned in kindergarten.
Wisdom was not at the top
Of the graduate school mountain,
But there in the sandpile at Sunday school. These are the things I learned:Share everything.
Play fair.
Don’t hit people.
Put things back where you found them.
Clean up your own mess.
Don’t take things that aren’t yours.
Say you’re sorry when you hurt somebody.
Wash your hands before you eat.
Flush.
Warm cookies and cold milk are good for you.
Live a balanced life –
Learn some and think some
And draw and paint and sing and dance
And play and work everyday some.
Take a nap every afternoon.
When you go out into the world,
Watch out for traffic,
Hold hands and stick together.
Be aware of wonder.
OH and a reminder for you….
ArtBliss workshops in the Washington DC area will open registration this Sunday, June 13th! We hope you’ll consider joining us this Fall!

Oh my… I remember my son’s Kindergarten Graduation like it was yesterday. It is amazing how fast they grow up… I do remember the poem! Thanks for sharing. Take Care.
Oh Cindy, thanks for sharing. And good luck to your son for his next stage in life. I hope he will have a wonderful time at school. regards Stefanie
Hey look there is Randy!! What a great shot of two of the men in your life. I don’t think I ever put two and two together and realized that Chandler and Lauren are so close in age. She is moving into 2nd grade!! Hmmm…. do you think that handsome little red head would be interested in a fiesty curly haired older girl? hee hee.
Was a great picture! I know what you mean about bittersweet. David wanted to be a Transformer when he grew up!
You have captured a beautiful moment Cindy….yes bittersweet, but just imagine what lies ahead! Hugs to you…and enjoy the moment!
That poem is one of my favourites too. What a moment. I’ve always thought that the transition from kindergarten to primary school was one of the biggest in your child’s life. Your little guy looks so happy!
Youre right we learned what we need in kindergarden! Lovely picture Cindy!
WOW CHANDLER IS GETTING SO BIG, TIME FLIES SO FAST. HE DEFINATELY LOOKS LIKE THE “WIMMER” SIDE. AND LOOK THERE MY BABY BROTHER…SO GOOD LOOKING THANK GOD HE LOOKS LIKE ME. 🙂 I REMEMBER LIKE IT WAS YESTERDAY WHEN RANDY WAS IN KINDERGARTEN. YES TIME FLIES. WHEN I LOOK AT RANDY I SEE A FANTASTIC LOOKING LEMASTER MAN.
ANY WHO, CONGRATULATIONS CHANDLER I WENT TO THE BUNNY COLLEGE MYSELF A GREAT SCHOOL 🙂 GIVE HUGS TO ALL.
Oh no, now I’m all teary-eyed. It’s such a precious time and it races by so fast you just have to take advantage of every moment, even the ones that seem insignificant. I can’t hardly believe I now have a 7th grader when just yesterday we were walking her to her first day of kindergarten.
I remember big tears when my sweet little boy entered kindergarten–not his–mine.
He’s 37 now and still my little boy although he towers over me at 6′ 3″. Precious memories, Cindy.
I miss those days! You have two handsome men there Cindy!
oh how sweet – definitely a time of year for these transitions… this was beautiful cindy… and thanks for posting that poem, i do love it…
So sweet & yes bittersweet too my friend!!! I remember having such a rough time when Courtney entered 1st grade, I yanked her from the public school & put her in a private christian school where I got a job to pay for her tuition. It was just too big of a change…FOR ME, not so much for her. lol But all worked out perfectly in the end…
Congrats to the graduate & hugs to Mommy…such a lovely post!
Smiles,
Susie
Congratulations to your little guy for completing Kindergarten! That’s quite the accomplishment and I’m sure he’s over the moon 🙂
As for you mum, even though he’s growing up, you should know your doing an absolutely wonderful job!! It may be bittersweet, but I would bet my jewelry corner that your one proud mamma 😀
Oh, Congrats to the little man…Such a milestone. I loved the younger years but I find that every stage is my favorite. I love how they enjoy what I enjoy and we how we can have interesting conversation.
What an adorable picture. He certainly does look like his Dad. It was certainly a pleasure to catch you on Facebook. Hope you all have a great summer.
I’d never seen that poem — so true!
I’m bereft that my son is growing up.
Aww! Such a great picture! It really is bittersweet, isn’t it? I know I am going to be wrecked when Wren starts kindergarten in 2011.
Oh Come on!!Its not fair..I told myself no crying today!!Oh Bugger Snots..(my inventive naughty words arrived shortly after my little ones)..kindergarten brings back so many wonderful memories.Congrats to your little man!Big Hugs-Cat
Sweet Cindy, just enjoy each day. They grow up – that is what they are supposed to do. But they do it one day at a time. So there is lots left for you to enjoy.
Thanks for sharing that poem – I’ve never read that. How very true.
Have a lovely Sunday! And wishing you fantastic response for ArtBliss (and I am totally sure you will receive just that)!
Congratulations Little Mama!!
Though actually I think the these days are as big or bigger milestones for the parents as they are for the kids!! Oh and Renate’s musings are ever so true and we need to file her advice in our hearts as a reminder to live each day one at a time and not to miss any of them!! 🙂

Ahhhh, congratulations #3 son! I love this picture with your husband. I bet his is a day he will never forget =)
What a lovely picture! I love the poem too – I haven’t seen it before.
My little boy leaves pre-school to start infant school this September – very, very bittersweet.
Oh my they sure grow up fast! I can vouch for that as my oldest will be starting her last year at college this fall. I still remember her as a cheerful little one, eager to do anything, eager to make everyone smile. It’s a little painful, but so wonderful to see them grow.
Children grow up so fast….enjoy them while you can. Seems like just a short while since my eldest girl was in kindergarten, dancing on the stage at the Christmas play. Now she is 33, married with 2 girls of her own!
