We had a low-key weekend around here for once, thank goodness! The weather was absolutely gorgeous…totally tolerable to do anything in. The kids enjoyed plenty of outdoor fun, from walking around the lake across the street to flying kites on the Mall in DC.
It was also my Dad’s birthday….time to bake a special cake! He initially asked for a pineapple upside down cake but I had to remind him that I’ve only made that once and it didn’t turn out (anyone have a good recipe??). So I decided on a tried and true favorite that I made for his birthday last year…a moist carrot cake complete with cream cheese frosting! My favorite is a recipe from the Mary Englebreit’s Sweet Treats Dessert Cookbook. Would you believe it calls for 4 cups of carrots. What a healthy birthday cake!

I made a little booklet from the kids to their Pop Pop in which they filled in some of their favorite things and birthday wishes. Here’s an excerpt from my 4 year old who just loves bunnies. By the way, he wants to be a bunny for Halloween…but where am I going to find a bunny costume that is anything bigger than 18 months?! I need to start looking..

And speaking of Halloween…it’s not too early (actually I’m probably a bit behind) on planning some Halloween-themed jewelry! I don’t usually go overboard with seasonal/holiday jewelry, but I did get a request. I ordered a set of petite-sized beads from Snozberry Beads. This lampwork artist just had a baby less than 2 weeks ago (number 5!) so I don’t know how she managed to make them. I’m not sure if they’ll go into a bracelet or two or earrings, but aren’t they adorable?
Have a great week ahead!
