Island get away

We went on a little island get away!  No where exotic, but still beautiful and serene.  If you’re from the East Coast, you may be familiar with Assateague Island – where wild horses roam free – and the adjoining Chincoteague Island.   Also known as “Chincoteague Ponies”, the horses make an annual swim between Chincoteague and Assateague Islands.  This big event that draws crowds every year happens to take place this week. You may remember the book Misty of Chincoteague from your childhood, which helped make the annual Pony Penning event famous.  I’d love to dig up our old copy, but I doubt it’s still around.

We saw many of the ponies, some of which will be auctioned this week.  It happened to be one of those unbearably hot 100 degree days, so when we found Mr. Whippy with their soft-serve icecream, we thought we were in heaven!  Other highlights of the day were the expansive beach on Assateague Island and the beautiful old Lighthouse with its red and white stripes.  I’ve gathered a bunch of my favorite pictures from our day on the Islands to share with you.  We hope to return once more this summer.

What a lovely adventure you all had. That must have been so cool to see the horses. I am ashamed to say that I have not read that book… but will have to check into it now. You seem to be having a wonderful summer, filled with fun! 🙂 TAKE CARE

PS
I love the ice cream pics! 🙂 Too cute…

That sounds so cool – the horses really swim between islands once a year? There are so many places in the world I want to go 🙂 Thanks for sending me some sun this morning. It has been so hot the last weeks, but it is dark and grey and pouring since 5 days straight.

I loved that book as a little girl and forced my husband to drive me to Chincoteague one year just so I could see the swim in person. Great pictures, too. The the beach one with you and your son is priceless. What a smile! 🙂

What a wonderful day and such a precious family! That was one of my favorite books… at the time, anything about horses was “one of my favorites.”

Mr Whippy is my all time favourite – it looks like it was a winner with your family too!

Thanks for the little peak at the islands. I live on the East Coast (of NC), but am determined one day to head a little farther north to check out what I’m missing. Thanks for the sneak peek!

What wonderful photos! You must have found a new lens!:~) Love the picture of all of the “boys”. I think it’s the first time I’ve seen Randy without a dress shirt and tie! It was lovely to “visit” the island with you and your family. Maybe someday I’ll get to see it for real! And I especially loved the photo of you and Nathaniel in the water! Savour these moments–as you know they really do pass quickly! I’m off to “my” babies today. Should be busy and fun!

Thanks for sharing your wonderful pictures. All the pictures are beautiful but the one of your little guy enjoying his ice cream makes me smile. I feel that way about ice cream too.

We lived in the Northern Neck area of Virginia for several years, so are very familiar with Chincoteague Island (although we never managed to actually visit there!) Thanks for sharing these amazing pictures with us. Your family is beautiful. 🙂

Love being part of your family vacation! The kids and hubby are adorable … how can anyone enjoy an ice cream cone more than Nathaniel … not possible. The expansive picture of the beach looks like a watercolor! I’m glad to see you’re enjoying some nice relaxing days. When school comes, we feel like we’ve been whipped in line by a drill sergeant!
