Tag Sale Heaven

Just stopping in to say Hello on this long weekend.  I hope you are enjoying it.   It has been jam packed full of fun outings here from my son’s big birthday party with his classmates today and the impromptu tag sale that we stumbled upon yesterday.  The tag sale!   So let me tell you a little about our day yesterday…. . 🙂

We had heard about a farm on the foothills of the Blueridge Mountains with a great big corn maze, and decided to take the kids yesterday.  The weather was around 80 and just perfect.  Well, you  know me, I decided to check and see if there were any antiques stops along the way.  Purcellville….now that sounded like a town with a quaint mainstreet and maybe an antiques shop or two.  Boy was I right!  As we drove in to town we noticed crowds walking everywhere and big signs saying, “Community Tag Sale”!  We hit the jack pot.   As it turns out, this was the town’s 8th annual tag sale and the entire town is turned in to one great big flea market, drawing thousands of people.  Parking lots, side streets, front yards, everywhere you looked there were tables and bins full of potential treasures.  This was tag sale heaven!

The streets were lined with turn-of-the-century homes and business from yesteryear.

We ended up staying ALL day, enjoying a picnic on a church lawn and getting to know many of the church members as we spent a good part of the afternoon at their sale.  We met a man who was from the first graduating class of McLean High School (1955) – the high school down the street from where we are building our house.  And while at the church, would you believe, my husband ran in to the Commanding Officer of his very first ship as a Navy Ensign.  Sadly, the USS Portland (LSD-37) was decommissioned in 2003 and was later sunk off the coast of Virginia in a target exercise.

Well, we never made it to the corn maze (but there’s always tomorrow, we do plan to go Monday), but everyone had fun.  On the drive home I could not pass up the chance to stop in my all-time favorite antiques store, and one that I’ve mentioned among other times here, and here– The {infamous}LUCKETT’S Store!  LUCKily for me, there is a huge playground practically in the parking lot -how convenient! – and while my husband watched the kids, I snuck in all alone to shop!

Well I must say it wasn’t long before I found a few things I could not live without…..  a beautiful old ironstone soup tureen would look so pretty holding a few baubles, sweet  award ribbons, a vintage jewelry box ready to be filled with beads, and some great old padlocks.  Now I know I don’t need to start another collection, but there’s something about the mystery of locks – and what they may have stored.  I learned that my Father in Law collected old locks as well, but he found ones with their matching keys and actually used them for their intended use.

I did find something so WONDERFUL, that it will have to wait for its very own blog post.    I’ve been looking for this something wonderful for a very long time, so it came home us as an early birthday present from my husband.  More about that one a bit later!

What a LOVELY day! Thanks for taking us along! I LOVE LUCKETS! Anytime you can get away and want to check it out again. . .I’m game. I take a ride down there (about 20+ minutes from Frederick) quite often. . .Anytime you want to check out the antique shops here in Frederick, just give me a call! There are some great ones here, too! Don’t know if we can capture the atmosphere of the tag sale but Frederick has an unique atmosphere all it’s own.

I can’t wait to hear about your “something wonderful!”

This sounded like a wonderful weekend. We went to a fleamarket in downtown Cologne yesterday too, but silly me – for got my camera. After that we went to the “market of the nations” – a third world country market, and guess what I bought beads there out of recycled glass – blog post will come about that later. Good to hear you are doing well.

WOW. You and Kerry always seem to find the best stuff! I love that whole area of NoVA — Leesburg, Purcellville, Waterford….so pretty! Plus, the horses! Oh I always wanted a horse farm out there! 🙂

I’m so glad it was a wonderful weekend for you, and it sounds like the 10th birthday was thoroughly celebrated!

Cincy, you find the best places to visit! Purcellville sounds like a sweet town. It looks like you found some nice stuff to bring home, and how nice for hubby to watch the kids while you scout around.

I can’t wait to see what wonderful item you purchased–I’m on pins and needles!

Enjoy the rest of your long weekend.

What luck! I have never been out to that side of Virginia, just may have to plan a trip one of these days! Have fun at the corn maze today, the weather this past week has been truly wonderful. Perfect for everything outdoors. Can’t wait to see and hear about the special treasure!

Such a wonderfilled day! I wish that I could convince my family to go to something like that! We had our own sort of magical day at the UW Homecoming game. It is a tradtion that we have done since were graduated. And we got to cheer Bucky Badger on to a big win over Minnesota and kept the traditional Paul Bunyan’s Axe for a 7th straight year. The day was glorious and sunny, not a cloud in the sky. And seeing that see of red cheering always makes me happy. Alas, I neglected to bring my camera this year. So I lived it. Thanks for sharing, Cindy! Enjoy the day!

Thanks for the pictures and story of your week end! I love hearing about your treasures and seeing the photos of you and your family. My favorites were Nathaniel and the dog in the stroller and the reflection of you and Nathaniel in the window as you photographed the wind vane! Cute. Savour the moments!

Looks like it was a fabulous family outing – and you scored treasures! LOVE the jewelry box! Wish I had known before that you have a secret passion for padlocks…
Waiting (not so) patiently for the reveal of the Wonderful Treasure.

There is nothing better than poking around finding someone’s junk to become your treasure! And while you may plan to use the jewelry box as storage, it sure makes a nice photo prop…
