How about a little Show and Tell? I read a blog recently in which the writer noted, “if the children have Show and Tell at school, why don’t we do the same here on our blogs?” I think this is a big part of what our blogs are about. And for non-writers like me, it’s more about showing than telling! 🙂 So join me as I share a few tarnished treasures, from antiques to one my FAVORITE books.
I know this is generally a jewelry-related blog. I seem to post just as much about antiques, I know. If truth be told, I love antiquing just as much as I like making jewelry. Really, I think it is truly a tie. Photography (my obsession with photo-taking really) is fast becoming the second place contender. I enjoyed two out of these three favorites this over the weekend.
Between a basket ball game, laser tag, and a trip to see the Nutcracker, I went with the whole family to the DC Big Flea at the Dulles Expo Center. This is the location of the big Gem and Jewelry Show that I attend as well. Apparently there were over 1,000 booths between the two large buildings. And a serious crowd. I went back alone on Sunday afternoon which was such a rare treat. I only made it back through one building, as this time I actually stopped to talk to vendors and spent more time really looking at the beautiful items. I found a booth that caught my eye immediately, The Paper Flea Market. Trina’s booth was filled with the things that I love….and as it turns out, she is local and has a new Etsy shop that she will be stocking. I found this great old 45 – singles record rack…perfect to hold postcards and cabinet cards. Just look at the vintage leather-trimmed case! Another great find. I plan to store ephemera and fragile papers inside.
I couldn’t resist the very clever and very sweet journals that Trina creates. She had a nice selection created from vintage books lining a shelf and there was one I couldn’t put down. I’ve been crazy about old buttons lately, so this one had to come home with me. I hope Trina adds the journals to her shop soon – you’ll love them too, and I think they’d make a great gift.
I came home with something rather new for me, as I’ve never picked up a piece of girl’s toy furniture. I’ve seen those small wooden pieces, but they never really registered as something for me. I was in a booth stocking up on chandelier crystals, and basking in the joy of finding a few small Victorian pocket mirrors all for $3.00, when something a pretty faded blue caught my eye. It was a tiny toy dresser, complete with that worn style of glass that I just love. In a moment I realized the dresser would be perfect as a display or for storage. Before long, it was coming home with me (as well as everything pictured with the dresser). The start of another collection? I’m not sure…..I’ve recently added powder-box music boxes, and Victorian buttons to that growing list .
Speaking of a new passion – another item I’ve been scouring for when I’m out antiquing are those old satin award or convention ribbons. There is something about them. I find it so interesting to do a little research and see what I can find out about the event listed in the beautiful gold letters. I found these together, apparently someone attended this convention two years in a row – as a guest and then a Delegate? If you look closely on the back side, you can see that half of the ribbons were actually a navy blue at one time but have faded to an ivory over the many years. It seems rare that one is still attached to the original packaging. Don’t you just love the pomp and circumstance of the old days?
This brings me to one of FAVORITE books about vintage treasures and craft projects. I was given “French General: Treasured Notions – Inspiration and Craft Projects Using Vintage Beads, Buttons, Ribbons and Trim from Tinsel Trading Company” by my friend Lori last fall. I loved it from the minute I saw it – its robins egg blue color, diminutive size, and the way its pages are gilded. The true treasure are the pictures and tales shared inside. This book seemed to capture the style and character that I have been gravitating towards lately in my jewelry designs. I have referred to this book again and again, finding a new thing of beauty each time I open the cover.
Maybe you can imagine my excitement then when I found this ribbon, hanging on the wall of a booth. Ah, what a moment to find the perfect thing (and you antiquers out there know what I mean)! I love the fancy ribbon with the tiny metallic sequins, and oh that bullion trim! Seems so hard to find nowadays. I did a little research when I got home and found that this ribbon is from the Independent Order of Good Samaritans and and the Daughters of Samaria. There isn’t a lot of information out there, but it is an African American organization that was originally founded in 1847. I wonder how old this ribbon is? I found one that is similar here. If you’d like to learn more about American fraternal organizations, I found an interesting time line here.
This concludes my Show and Tell. I hope you enjoyed the vintages treasures I had for you in this round!
Have a great week ahead. Looks like we’re going to be hit with a little snow. I’ll have some happy kids if school is delayed, canceled, or at the very least released early!

Cindy,
The ribbon is divine…love the color and the trim work. And, the tiny toy dresser is making my eyes water! Great idea, and the color is perfect isn’t it?
BTW…this evening my daughter was about to order on Amazon, and called to see if I wanted her to order a book so she could get FREE shipping…you know what I told her didn’t you? Yes, your book suggestion =) And, I received my silk ribbon and fibers in the mail today =) I am floating right about now…..
You really scored big time, sweet Cindy! I am drooling over your finds. The journal is gorgeous and the little dresser is over the moon! Just perfect! I will definitely be putting that book on my wish list. Such a treasure load – oh, I wish we could go treasure hunting together…
Aah, Cindy, thanks for the ride and showing off your treasueres. Especially the dresser!
amazing amazing treasures!! i wish i was there to hit those sales/shows with you!!
What a wonderful time you had at the DC Big Flea! You found some beautiful treasures there, and I’m a little jealous.
I’ve see the Treasured Notions book at B&N and thought it was lovely, but my collection of books is alarming. But I’m sure I can find some space for it……
I love going antiquing along with you vicariously! You always find such sweet things 🙂
Hi Cindy! I have Kaari Meng’s book on French Inspired Jewelry and it’s wonderful! I need to check out Treasured Notions now! Their web site is good too – ordered a couple of bracelet kits and some beads and I loved them! Thanks for sharing your neato antique finds. The ribbon is a very cool find!
I love all your wonderful finds! I would have loved to have been at that show with you, it sounds like a lot of great items were just waiting to be found and given new homes.
These treasures/finds are fabulous! How beautiful and lovely to capture pieces of history and the way you’ve written about all of this is wonderful, too!
Hi Cindy, you’ve received an award…please have a wee look here if you wish to accept it http://vivibijoux.com/2011/01/stylish-blog-award/ Thanks for a lovely blog and loads of eye candy here with these treasures! smiles, Virginie
Very inspiring Cindy! Beautiful items!
Cindy you and I would make a great team! I love antiquing as much as jewelry making too. I think that is why I incorporate a lot of vintage and antique pieces into my jewelry so it gives me a reason to always be on the hunt for new treasures.
The ribbon is gorgeous! The color is amazing…I think it would look great framed.
Oh I love Kaari Meng’s books! You must get her French Inspired Jewelry book. Her story boards and layouts always give me a fresh idea when I look at them.
Cheers,
Stacy

Cindy, thanks for sharing. It is always interesting to see and hear what makes some of the most talented jewelry designers tick! You reminded me of a mention I made in my posts about family pins a few weeks back about showing a necklace I inherited that is over 100 years old. There is also a perfume bottle with similar vintage which happens to be one of my treasures. I think I will be showing and telling both too.
what great finds!
i love the treasured notions book. when i saw it in the bookstore it caught my eye rightaway.
Those are some mighty fine treasures you found. I wish I had tha t kind of luck around here that you do out there. Thanks for sharing.

Great idea. I’m going to have to start a weekly blog post doing show & tell with all the things I hoard…oh I mean collect over the years. The scottie planter caught my eye as I have three of those in different colors. Oh yes! I was a big Scottie dog collector and still have most of my stuff, but I discovered beads and spend my money on then instead…but still…I love looking for some deals & unique things I don’t have in my collections

I’m constantly amazed at how our brains work in tandem! I adore little doll dressers and have beens searching for one for years for my sis in just the right size and price. And those award ribbons! I have some old horse show ribbons (you should ask your sis about some too) that I got when I was a kid but they’re a bit large but maybe I could use the rosette part? You’ve got me thinking now! Thanks for the great post and enjoy the snow. We’re getting our right now!
beautiful treasures cindy
Oh Cindy, we would get in great trouble together at any flea/antique market. I LOVE the little dresser, I would want that too. Alas, no where to put it, I’m so glad you took it home. Love all the treasures you collected. Do I see some bling there? Look out…ha ha! I love the French General’s website too, very cool. I’ll have to check out the book. Okay, did I tell you I have a dog figurine collection? I see a show and tell of my own! You won’t believe it. Wayyyyy too many. Hugs, Riki
i love seeing what inspires others – these are all wonderful and made me think on those awards that made someone feel special all those years ago… they hold memories of achievements…
i saw what you wrote on lisa’s blog – you are not the only one with a messy studio – my room is chaos – but my chaos…
What fantastic finds! I do miss antiquing in Virginia where I collected most of my pink Depression glass. But Cindy, that ribbon with the staring eye is creeping me out! hehe!
Hi Cindy, I tried to post to this while in Florida but had problems on Mom’s computer and no wifi for my laptop so i was disconnected for 2 weeks! Trying to catchup a little now. anyway…. I love the dresser and the ribbons are very cool. Last year I made necklaces for a group of friends from Art and Soul and i used parts from vintage Independent Order of Oddfellows convention ribbons from the late 1800’s and early 1900’s. I love all the old sentiment, their’s is FLT, friendship love and truth. I’ll have to post about it one day for you to see.
