I *heart* Mother of pearl

by Cindy on February 6, 2011

Hello!

If you’ve stopped by in the past, you already know that making jewelry is not my only obsession   interest.  I’m an antiquing die-hard and bring my camera with me as a rule.  So I had the idea recently, why not share a little about the things that I like to search for….those special little treasures that have me looking high and low as soon as I step foot in an antique shop.  Although the list is constantly growing, my husband and kids know exactly what these are and join in the challenge.  My 2 year old son doesn’t quite understand what Victorian albums are yet, so he’s excited to call out “Mickey Mouse!” when he sees one.  Yes, there are plenty of vintage Mickey paraphernalia to be found (for you Disney fans!).  I’ll be writing “I heart” posts on my many collections in the future.

When I saw the cover of the Jan/Feb issue of Victoria, I picked it up right away.   I haven’t bought this magazine in some time, maybe because I’ve cut back on magazines due to a lack of time.  Years ago, around my college days, I was a big fan of this Victoria.   Some of the magazine was a bit stuffy for me, but overall there was just something romantic and dreamy that had me turning the pages.  Recently is was the mother of pearl cover that drew me in.   I love the iridescence and the warm glow that you find in old mother of pearl pieces.   Here are a few favorites in my collection…

I’d love to hear what you *heart*.  Recently Beth Bricker of Vintage Sweets shared her collection of engraved spoons in this wonderful post.  You’ll have to visit and see what she planned to do with them (what a fantastic idea!).   I found myself  ooohing and aahing over Beth’s collection, finding it impossible to resist something so sentimental when mixed with tarnished silver.  I think I’ll be on the lookout for engraved spoons too, thanks to Beth! 🙂

*In case you’re stopping by for the first time, please visit this post for a chance to win a copy of Wire Style 2!  You still have time to enter……I’ll draw the winner after 11:00 am EST on Monday!

Aww Cindy, thanks for mentioning my blog. I too have several MOP pieces and may just have to blog about them in the future. I also bought the magazine on Tuesday just because of the cover (and thought I might have time on Wednesday/snow day to read it) I absolutely love the heart and the necklace you made with it. I can’t wait to see it in Wire Style 2.

I love the Victoria Magazine and still subscribe today. What a lovely collection of Mother Of Pearl you have. But it looks like you might have too much and I would love to help you out–just send some my way and you’ll feel much better! Seriously though, you’ve got a unique collection of special pieces there.

I love that all your boys know just what you are on the look-out for.

Mother of pearl always conjures up sweet childhood memories in my grandma’s sewing room. She saved every button or buckle that came off clothing that was too worn to mend. I loved getting them out and just running my fingers through them.

Well, you already know about lots of things I collect – and you know I am partial to mother of pearl. Your collection is so lovely!
I am also looking forward to seeing more of your collections.

LOVE the buckles and the brass buttons!! Love the MOP with your antiqued silver.

I love rocks. The river rocks on Flathead Lake are really wonderful colors and I keep picking up more whenever I go down there, thinking to use them in photographs. I love their smoothness and their varied colors. Unfortunately we don’t have much room in the house so they live in the trunk of my car. I should probably take them out, they’re probably not enhancing my front wheel drive.

Me too, me too! I LOVE mop so much. I keep buying buttons, what am I going to do with them all? I guess because the represent a little package of history. I use mop on silver trays to display my jewelry at shows. Everyone loves them, draws them in. Thanks for sharing Cindy, love it. I’ll go check Beth’s site out. Hugs,Riki

OMG all of that is gorgeous! I’m going to the wrong antique stores.

I puffy heart cameras, tins, bottles, and typewriters. Odd things that just jump out at me. And everything you find, ha!

I feel the same way about Victoria magazine. I no longer buy it regularly but I remember how it could “transport” me to a different place. I’m not really a collector but I appreciate beautiful things. Your MOP collection is lovely.

I heart mother of pearl too….pins, spoons, buttons, little dishes…..It is all so wonderful! I also love old apothecary bottles, transferware, ironstone, nests, typewriters and treen.
Actually come to think of it there is not much I do not like! Victoria is a lovely magazine and they highlight collections so nicely.

Oh so funny I feel the same way about this magazine! A little stuffy but the eye candy does override it! My eye’s started twitching when I saw this cover and I had to buy it! I adore mother of pearl but especially vintage carved charms and victorian birds. I have quite a few I bought to make jewelry with and discovered I could not part with them. One of my favorite charms is a tiny carved lock and key from an old watch fob. I would love to find a set of MOP handled knives for Thanksgiving!…sigh…

Thank you for stopping by my blog, and for the lovely comment. I’m stopping by for the first time (I hate to admit) and HAD to add how much I LOVE MOP too! Love your creations too. Happy hunting! JoAnn
