Nostalgia by mail

by Cindy on May 20, 2011

My mailman has recently reminded me with his deliveries that I am one lucky lady.

I’m lucky to have sweet friends, friends who think of me when they’re out antiquing or rummaging around estate sales.  They know me well enough to know about the many things I hold dear – from buttons to Victorian pictures.  I gathered up the treasures I received in the mail in the last few weeks and thought I’d share them with you – brushing off the dust of many years and letting their beauty show once again.

I was so surprised when I received a gift from dear Beth, out of the blue.  She knows I’m crazy about Scotties and said she thought of me when she saw these book ends. What an adorable pair – carved in wood, you can just see their expression.

Christine knew how much I love vintage mother of pearl and sent me these old belt buckles, along with some great embroidered handkerchiefs.   Can you imagine the time it took to stitch these simple flowers?

I received this very old cube of black glass pins and rhinestone buttons from Lori.  I’ve never seen anything like it and imagine the pins were used for pinning clothes (toilet meaning dressing table or area in older times).  I’ve done some research on these pins and it seems quite rare to have so many pins still on the cube.

Kerry sent a text from an estate sale asking if I had “any use for old tintypes?” – she was drawn to the ones with the rosy cheeks.  I think she knew the answer.

I would rescue every old picture if I could, after all, these were someone’s cherished family members.  I can’t tell you how many times I’ve wondered about the faces in the pictures – who were they?  What were they thinking that day?  What became of their life?  Do they have any living relatives  – if only I could send them the pictures so they could be kept in the family.  And what if they had no family left to remember them, which was most likely the case.  Well then they have come to the right place.  I pull out my piles of old pictures and collection of velvet Victorian albums (a future blog post in itself) and reminisce about people I have never met.  It feels good to reflect on these strangers, as they were not always strangers.  And who would want to be forgotten?  Thank you friends for reminding me of that.

Now speaking of treasures found, I’m hoping to squeeze in some time at the BIG Luckett’s Spring Market tomorrow.  It’s my idea of heaven (even if I’ll have a 2 year old in tow – I’m determined!).  I hear a bunch of blog friends will be caravanning in from the Frederick area.  Who knows, I might see you there! 🙂

Have a nice weekend & thanks for visiting!

I love being the caretaker of the vintage treasures we find. I cherish Scotties too – some day I hope to own a real live breathing one! Enjoy – you have wonderful friends!

So funny I didn’t grow up with any family so I find myself attracted to old things – someone loved them enough to keep them somewhere! I miss antiquing I haven’t been in years! Have fun for me too!

What a lovely post! I often think of you when I’m doing my wireworking…wanting to make my coils and swirls just right. 🙂 Now I’ll have another reference when I’m wandering around an old market looking for just the right things to take home.

That pin cube is really extraordinary – I have never seen one like it. Maybe they were only made for the export market.
Have fun at the market, sweet Cindy!

How lucky we are to have friends who think of us and send us treasures out of the blue!

I’m smitten with the tiny tintypes, but they are just to expensive for me–at least the ones I see online. I don’t have time for estate sales, but even if I did there are not many around my area anyway.

Enjoy your weekend!!!

Loved the post. I love antiquing as well I hardly ever go however as I do not have room for even a gum wrapper. I read Lori’s blog this morning about books. I don’t have room for even one more book. Any way I am at the age I need to de-stash, Be Blessed

Sandy Richardson May 22, 2011 at 1:00 pm

P.S. when my friend and I go antiquing or greeting card shopping we say to each other “pretend I got this for you” smile Because we are in need of de-stashing at our age she is 83 and I my just behind her a few years

I’m glad the scotties like their new home. I have a couple of the pin cubes Lori got you. I love mine too One of mine is flat with pins along the edge, the other is similar to yours. I rarely see them but when I do they are pricey. Did you find anything this weekend at Lucketts?

What wonderful friends you have. My sister would die if she saw the scottie book ends – I have told you she collects scottie things and I do my best to add to her collection! I wish I had known about Lucketts – will have to put it on my calendar for next year – do they have a fall one? My husband and I went several years ago and had a ball. Loved your post yesterday about Fort Wimmer – what a great idea – and dog tags – loved it.
