{"id":4258,"date":"2010-10-03T02:16:41","date_gmt":"2010-10-03T06:16:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.sweetbeadstudio.com\/?p=4258"},"modified":"2010-10-03T02:22:18","modified_gmt":"2010-10-03T06:22:18","slug":"the-beauty-of-crowned-gems","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.sweetbeadstudio.com\/?p=4258","title":{"rendered":"The beauty of Crowned Gems"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Hello friends<\/p>\n<p>Thank you for stopping by.\u00a0 Today I&#8217;m going to tell you a little about the\u00a0class that I took at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.artblissworkshops.com\">The Inaugural Event<\/a>.\u00a0 I was as happy as can be to <em>finally<\/em> have the chance to sit in <a href=\"http:\/\/somethingsublime.typepad.com\/something_sublime_from_th\/\"><strong>Deryn Mentock&#8217;s<\/strong> <\/a>classroom!\u00a0 \u00a0 I had\u00a0hoped for this for years actually, as I&#8217;ve been a faithful Something Sublime blog follower since my early days of creating jewelry.\u00a0 Truth be told, wanting to take a class with Deryn was a huge part of my wanting to be a part of bringing\u00a0nationally-recognized artists to the DC area.\u00a0 Finally having this opportunity\u00a0was one of those little \u00a0jewelry-dreams come true.\u00a0\ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_4259\" style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-4259\" href=\"http:\/\/www.sweetbeadstudio.com\/?attachment_id=4259\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4259\" class=\"size-full wp-image-4259\" title=\"crowned-gems-class9\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sweetbeadstudio.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/crowned-gems-class9.jpg\" alt=\"Classmates Maureen Baranov and Anne Savage\" width=\"500\" height=\"332\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.sweetbeadstudio.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/crowned-gems-class9.jpg 500w, http:\/\/www.sweetbeadstudio.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/crowned-gems-class9-150x99.jpg 150w, http:\/\/www.sweetbeadstudio.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/crowned-gems-class9-300x199.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-4259\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Classmates Maureen Baranov and Anne Savage<\/p><\/div>\n<p>In <em>Crowned Gems<\/em>, Deryn demonstrated a wide range of techniques.\u00a0 She taught everything from cold connections to working with annealed steel wire.\u00a0 We worked with brass filigree, drilled, heat patinated\u00a0and created metal staples (not as easy as they look!).\u00a0\u00a0 At the core of the class though were\u00a0the precious<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ehow.com\/about_5453637_history-tintype-portraits.html\"> tintype <\/a>pictures.\u00a0 As an avid antique and\u00a0all-things-vintage collector, this really intrigued me.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Deryn provided everyone with a small, postage-sized gem tintype.\u00a0 We all eagerly opened our kits to see if we received a man or a woman.\u00a0 By the way, tintypes were made on a sheet of iron, not tin as one might think.\u00a0 For my project, I used a larger tintype that I brought with me, as the stately woman in the picture really moved me.\u00a0 I&#8217;ll admit I&#8217;ve been somewhat hesitant to alter old photographs for jewelry design&#8230;.
