I designed Au Courant Corsage<\/strong> <\/span>over the summer envisioning a simple statement piece – a necklace with a large cluster of lampwork hollows, something asymmetrical.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0I wanted to showcase\u00a0lots of wire<\/em>.\u00a0\u00a0This necklace has 12 feet of 16-gauge wire alone!\u00a0\u00a0With visions of hollows in various shades, I began to look\u00a0online…..when I\u00a0found Charmaine Jackson of Encircle Designs<\/a>,\u00a0and saw\u00a0her custom-order hollow color chart,\u00a0 I knew these were the <\/em>beads I was looking for.\u00a0\u00a0 I noticed that she was in Virginia too, and that sealed the deal.\u00a0<\/p>\n

I visualized a cluster of beads reminiscent of a floral corsage<\/a>.\u00a0 Do you remember those corsages worn to a homecoming dance – pinned right on to your dress, or better yet, worn on your wrist?\u00a0\u00a0 This is my modern version of wearing a small bouquet.\u00a0 The challenge was how to create a nice, bulbous focal with round beads.\u00a0 I cannot tell you\u00a0 how many different ways I redesigned the focal cluster.\u00a0 I wanted it to “sit” just right.\u00a0 I decided I needed to use smaller beads (the above picture is the first go-around before changing the bead size).\u00a0 Charmaine was wonderful and made a custom set of beads in the smaller size I requested for a second round, under a tight deadline.\u00a0 I think I fiddled with this focal more than I have in any project I’ve made to date.\u00a0 When I work with a new wire concept, I often\u00a0generate a pile of practice pieces.\u00a0 This project was no exeption.\u00a0 You’ll see how something amazing happened when I brought my\u00a0 pieces of wire to the beach; \u00a0they oxidized naturally from the salty air.<\/p>\n

I also have a necklace in this issue taken from the Step by Step Wire vault:\u00a0 Heartstrings.\u00a0 Heartstrings is special to me as it was my first time being published with Step By Step Wire magazine – back in 2008.\u00a0 The\u00a0silvered ivory\u00a0lampwork beads are by Kim Typanski, who sadly no long makes beads.\u00a0 She is pursuing another\u00a0passion – horses!<\/p>\n

I’m looking forward to seeing this issue in print .\u00a0 I’m\u00a0considering teaching my first class with\u00a0the Au Courant Corsage\u00a0project in mind – maybe keeping it simple and adapting it to a bracelet.\u00a0<\/p>\n
