{"id":5148,"date":"2011-01-11T00:52:49","date_gmt":"2011-01-11T04:52:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.sweetbeadstudio.com\/?p=5148"},"modified":"2011-01-11T00:52:49","modified_gmt":"2011-01-11T04:52:49","slug":"tarnished-treasures","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.sweetbeadstudio.com\/?p=5148","title":{"rendered":"Tarnished Treasures"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>How about a little Show and Tell?\u00a0 I read a blog recently in which the writer noted, &#8220;if the children have Show and Tell at school, why don&#8217;t we do the same here on our blogs?&#8221;\u00a0 I think this is a big part of what our blogs are about.\u00a0 And for non-writers like me, it&#8217;s\u00a0 more about <em>showing<\/em> than <em>telling<\/em>! \ud83d\ude42\u00a0 So join me as I share a few tarnished treasures,\u00a0 from antiques to one my FAVORITE books.<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-5149\" href=\"http:\/\/www.sweetbeadstudio.com\/?attachment_id=5149\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5149\" title=\"vintage-finds-2011_8\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sweetbeadstudio.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/vintage-finds-2011_8.jpg\" alt=\"vintage-finds-2011_8\" width=\"515\" height=\"514\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.sweetbeadstudio.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/vintage-finds-2011_8.jpg 515w, http:\/\/www.sweetbeadstudio.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/vintage-finds-2011_8-150x149.jpg 150w, http:\/\/www.sweetbeadstudio.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/vintage-finds-2011_8-300x299.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 515px) 100vw, 515px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I know this is generally a jewelry-related blog.\u00a0 I seem to post just as much about antiques, I know.\u00a0 If truth be told, I love antiquing <em>just<\/em> as much as I like making jewelry.\u00a0 Really, I think it is truly a <strong>tie<\/strong>.\u00a0\u00a0 Photography (my obsession with photo-taking really) is fast becoming the second place contender.\u00a0\u00a0 I enjoyed two out of these three favorites this over the weekend.<\/p>\n<p>Between a basket ball game, laser tag, and a trip to see the Nutcracker, I went with the whole family to the DC Big Flea at the Dulles Expo Center.\u00a0 This is the location of the big Gem and Jewelry Show that I attend as well.\u00a0 Apparently there were over 1,000 booths between the two large buildings.\u00a0 And a serious crowd.\u00a0 I went back alone on Sunday afternoon which was such a rare treat.\u00a0 I only made it back through one building, as this time I actually stopped to talk to vendors and spent more time really\u00a0 looking at the beautiful items. I found a booth that caught my eye immediately,\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thepaperfleamarket.blogspot.com\/\">The Paper Flea Market<\/a>.\u00a0 Trina&#8217;s booth was filled with the things that I love&#8230;.and as it turns out, she is local and has a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.etsy.com\/shop\/thepaperfleastudio\">new Etsy shop<\/a> that she will be stocking.\u00a0 I found this great old 45 &#8211; singles record rack&#8230;perfect to hold postcards and cabinet cards.\u00a0 Just look at the vintage leather-trimmed case!\u00a0 Another great find.\u00a0 I plan to store ephemera and fragile papers inside.<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-5150\" href=\"http:\/\/www.sweetbeadstudio.com\/?attachment_id=5150\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full very clever and very sweet journals that Trina creates.\u00a0 She had a nice selection created from vintage books lining a shelf and there was one I couldn&#8217;t put down.\u00a0 I&#8217;ve been crazy about old buttons lately, so this one had to come home with me.\u00a0 I hope\u00a0 Trina adds the journals to her shop soon &#8211; you&#8217;ll love them too, and I think they&#8217;d make a great gift.<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-5151\" href=\"http:\/\/www.sweetbeadstudio.com\/?attachment_id=5151\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full rather new for me, as I&#8217;ve never picked up a piece of girl&#8217;s toy furniture.\u00a0 I&#8217;ve seen those small wooden pieces, but they never really registered as something for <em>me<\/em>.\u00a0 I was in a booth stocking up on chandelier crystals, and basking in the joy of finding a few small Victorian pocket mirrors all for $3.00, when something a pretty faded blue caught my eye.\u00a0 It was a tiny toy dresser, complete with that worn style of glass that I just love.\u00a0 In a moment I realized the dresser would be perfect as a display or for storage.\u00a0 Before long, it was coming home with me (as well as everything pictured with the dresser). \u00a0 The start of another collection?\u00a0 I&#8217;m not sure&#8230;..I&#8217;ve recently added powder-box music boxes, and Victorian buttons to that growing list .<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-5154\" href=\"http:\/\/www.sweetbeadstudio.com\/?attachment_id=5154\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" &#8211; another item I&#8217;ve been scouring for when I&#8217;m out antiquing are those old satin award or convention ribbons.\u00a0 There is <em>something<\/em> about them.\u00a0 I find it so interesting to do a little research and see what I can find out about the event listed in the beautiful gold letters.\u00a0 I found these together, apparently someone attended this convention two years in a row &#8211; as a guest and then a Delegate?\u00a0\u00a0 If you look closely on the back side, you can see that half of the ribbons were actually a navy blue at one time but have faded to an ivory over the many years.\u00a0 It seems rare that one is still attached to the original packaging.\u00a0 Don&#8217;t you just love the pomp and circumstance of the old days?<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-5157\" href=\"http:\/\/www.sweetbeadstudio.com\/?attachment_id=5157\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5157\" FAVORITE books about vintage treasures and craft projects.\u00a0 I was given <a href=\"https:\/\/www.frenchgeneral.com\/book-treasured.php\">&#8220;French General:\u00a0 Treasured Notions &#8211; Inspiration and Craft Projects Using Vintage Beads, Buttons, Ribbons and Trim from Tinsel Trading Company&#8221;<\/a> by <a href=\"http:\/\/lorianderson.blogspot.com\/\">my friend Lori<\/a> last fall.\u00a0 I loved it from the minute I saw it &#8211; its robins egg blue color, diminutive size, and the way its pages are gilded.\u00a0 The true treasure are the pictures and tales shared inside.\u00a0 This book seemed to capture the style and character that I have been gravitating towards lately in my jewelry designs.\u00a0 I have referred to this book again and again, finding a new thing of beauty each time I open the cover.<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-5158\" href=\"http:\/\/www.sweetbeadstudio.com\/?attachment_id=5158\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5158\" title=\"treasured-notions-book-image\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sweetbeadstudio.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/treasured-notions-book-image.jpg\" alt=\"treasured-notions-book-image\" width=\"250\" height=\"250\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.sweetbeadstudio.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/treasured-notions-book-image.jpg 250w, my excitement then when I found this ribbon, hanging on the wall of a booth.\u00a0 Ah, what a moment to find the perfect thing (and you antiquers out there know what I mean)!\u00a0 I love the fancy ribbon with the tiny metallic sequins, and oh that bullion trim!\u00a0 Seems so hard to find nowadays.\u00a0 I did a little research when I got home and found that this ribbon is from the Independent Order of Good Samaritans and and the Daughters of Samaria.\u00a0 There isn&#8217;t a lot of information out there, but it is an African American organization that was originally founded in 1847.\u00a0 I wonder how old this ribbon is?\u00a0 I found one that is similar<a href=\"http:\/\/www.seeauctions.com\/show_item\/155867\/#views\"> here<\/a>.\u00a0 If you&#8217;d like to learn more about American fraternal organizations, I found an interesting time line <a href=\"http:\/\/www.phoenixmasonry.org\/masonicmuseum\/fraternalism\/chronology_fraternal_organizations_america.htm\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-5159\"
