{"id":9657,"date":"2012-07-10T00:03:38","date_gmt":"2012-07-10T04:03:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.sweetbeadstudio.com\/?p=9657"},"modified":"2012-07-10T00:07:10","modified_gmt":"2012-07-10T04:07:10","slug":"friends-are-like-frosting-on-a-cupcake-reflections-on-a-trip-out-of-town","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.sweetbeadstudio.com\/?p=9657","title":{"rendered":"Friends are like frosting on a cupcake {reflections on a trip out of town}"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Where has the time gone? \u00a0What little blogging I ever did before has all but come to a stop with summer in full swing. \u00a0Absolutely no tv and plenty of time outside, the pool, the beach&#8230;. \u00a0and now finally the weather has cooled off and we&#8217;re getting a break in the low 80&#8217;s!<\/p>\n<p>Recently my husband Randy and I had the chance to do something we haven&#8217;t done in <em>so<\/em> long &#8211; I know exactly how long and that&#8217;s sad. \u00a0But we got on a plane, just the two of us, and had one of the <em>best<\/em> weekends ever in Michigan. \u00a0Our agenda? \u00a0To visit some wonderful life-long family friends and attend the wedding of one of Randy&#8217;s old Naval Academy room mates.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sweetbeadstudio.com\/?attachment_id=9675\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-9675\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-9675\" title=\"Michigan_Title photo_opt\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sweetbeadstudio.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/Michigan_Title-photo_opt.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"515\" height=\"727\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.sweetbeadstudio.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/Michigan_Title-photo_opt.jpg 515w, http:\/\/www.sweetbeadstudio.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/Michigan_Title-photo_opt-150x211.jpg 150w, http:\/\/www.sweetbeadstudio.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/Michigan_Title-photo_opt-212x300.jpg 212w, http:\/\/www.sweetbeadstudio.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/Michigan_Title-photo_opt-478x675.jpg 478w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 515px) 100vw, 515px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Madeline has invited us so many times to Dearborn over the years and I can&#8217;t believe we were finally able to visit her home. \u00a0My Grandmother and Madeline&#8217;s mother were best friends so many years ago. \u00a0And Madeline&#8217;s Dad was a grandfather to me &#8211; so you can imagine how special it was for me to actually get the chance to visit! They took us to one of their favorite neighborhood middle eastern restaurants and introduced us to some yummy new dishes. \u00a0After that, Randy and had Lebanese food for the next two days straight &#8211; once we got back, we had to head to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lebanesetaverna.com\/restaurant_tysons.html\">Lebanese Taverna <\/a>straight from the airport. \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n<p>Madeline has raved about <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thehenryford.org\/village\/historicdistricts.aspx\">Greenfield Village<\/a> and I can see why. \u00a0As described in the brochure I picked up, &#8220;step through the Greenfield Village&#8217;s gate, and it&#8217;s like being whisked back in time&#8221;&#8230;. you know <em>that<\/em> is right up my alley!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sweetbeadstudio.com\/?attachment_id=9692\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-9692\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-9692\" title=\"Michigan_Greenfield Village Gate\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sweetbeadstudio.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/Michigan_Greenfield-Village-Gate_opt.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"515\" height=\"432\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.sweetbeadstudio.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/Michigan_Greenfield-Village-Gate_opt.jpg 515w, http:\/\/www.sweetbeadstudio.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/Michigan_Greenfield-Village-Gate_opt-150x125.jpg 150w, http:\/\/www.sweetbeadstudio.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/Michigan_Greenfield-Village-Gate_opt-300x251.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 515px) 100vw, 515px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The sprawling 81 acre park, opened in 1929, \u00a0is filled with Americana from the last 300 years. Kennedy&#8217;s limousine<\/p>\n<p>My favorite exhibit was the heart-wrenching but fascinating <strong>Titanic Artifact Exhibit<\/strong>. \u00a0Commemorating the 100th anniversary of the Titanic tragedy, this exhibit features 300 actual pieces from the Titanic. \u00a0We had our pictures taken on the true-to-life replica Grand Staircase, and touched actual ice of a recreated iceberg. \u00a0All of these things helped put you in to the frame of mind of what it may have been like to be a passenger on the maiden voyage. \u00a0Especially the tickets.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sweetbeadstudio.com\/?attachment_id=9728\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-9728\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-9728\" title=\"Michigan_Titanic Boarding pass\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sweetbeadstudio.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/Michigan_Titanic-Boarding-pass_opt-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"480\" height=\"569\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.sweetbeadstudio.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/Michigan_Titanic-Boarding-pass_opt-1.jpg 480w, http:\/\/www.sweetbeadstudio.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/Michigan_Titanic-Boarding-pass_opt-1-150x177.jpg 150w, http:\/\/www.sweetbeadstudio.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/Michigan_Titanic-Boarding-pass_opt-1-253x300.jpg 253w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Upon entering the exhibit, you are given a boarding pass with the name of an actual passenger on the Titanic. \u00a0You learn their age, where they were from, and additional \u00a0information about them. \u00a0You now feel a personal connection &#8211; and feel a bit anxious to learn their fate that is posted on the wall at the end of the exhibit. \u00a0I have been drawn to Titanic history for some time, even more so after this exhibit and quickly purchased,\u00a0<em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Titanic-First-Accounts-Classics-Edition\/dp\/0143106627\">Titanic, First Accounts<\/a><\/em>\u00a0by Tim Malten. \u00a0I couldn&#8217;t put the book down. \u00a0If you would like to learn more about the passengers on the Titanic, Encyclopedia Titanic has individual biographies of the passengers that can be found\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.encyclopedia-titanica.org\/titanic_passenger_list\/\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sweetbeadstudio.com\/?attachment_id=9729\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-9729\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-9729\" title=\"Titanic Boarding Pass\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sweetbeadstudio.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/Michigan_Mrs_opt.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"515\" height=\"787\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.sweetbeadstudio.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/Michigan_Mrs_opt.jpg 515w, http:\/\/www.sweetbeadstudio.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/Michigan_Mrs_opt-150x229.jpg 150w, http:\/\/www.sweetbeadstudio.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/Michigan_Mrs_opt-196x300.jpg 196w, http:\/\/www.sweetbeadstudio.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/Michigan_Mrs_opt-441x675.jpg 441w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 515px) 100vw, 515px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sweetbeadstudio.com\/?attachment_id=9730\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-9730\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-9730\" title=\"Michigan_Titanic Ticket 2_opt\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sweetbeadstudio.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/Michigan_Titanic-Ticket-2_opt.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"515\" height=\"783\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.sweetbeadstudio.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/Michigan_Titanic-Ticket-2_opt.jpg 515w, http:\/\/www.sweetbeadstudio.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/Michigan_Titanic-Ticket-2_opt-150x228.jpg 150w, http:\/\/www.sweetbeadstudio.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/Michigan_Titanic-Ticket-2_opt-197x300.jpg 197w, http:\/\/www.sweetbeadstudio.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/Michigan_Titanic-Ticket-2_opt-443x675.jpg 443w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 515px) 100vw, 515px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><em>Then, above the clamor of people asking questions of each other, there came the terrible cry: \u201cLower the boats. Women and children first!\u201d They struck utter terror into my heart, and now they will ring in my cars until I die. They meant my own safety; but they also meant the greatest loss I have ever suffered \u2014 the life of my husband.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">-A quote from Charlotte Collyer in an excerpt from\u00a0<em>Voices from the Titanic: The Epic Story of the Tragedy from the People Who Were There<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">** \u00a0 \u00a0 ** \u00a0 \u00a0 ** \u00a0 \u00a0 ** \u00a0 \u00a0 ** \u00a0 \u00a0 ** \u00a0 \u00a0 ** \u00a0 \u00a0 ** \u00a0 \u00a0 ** \u00a0 \u00a0 ** \u00a0 \u00a0 **<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">On a much lighter note, now back to food. \u00a0A few things that really stand out about our trip were being united with good friends, the amazing walks through history, and the food. \u00a0We were in search of good hummus and baba ganoush when the restaurant, <a href=\"http:\/\/lapitadearborn.com\/menus\">LaPita<\/a> caught our eye. \u00a0We got so lucky &#8211; boy was it ever good. \u00a0If we lived in Dearborn, we would find a way to eat here every single week! \u00a0 Just check out the menu and you&#8217;ll see &#8211; and imagine all of that served with doughy pita rounds, hot from the stone hearth. \u00a0And just around the corner we stumbled upon <a href=\"http:\/\/www.iversensbakery.com\/#!iversen's-express\">Iverson&#8217;s Bakery<\/a>\u00a0&#8230; and you know I just <em>have<\/em> to taste test a local bakery when I find one. \u00a0 I walked out with my usual suspect, a brownie, but also tried one of these&#8230;.. \u00a0a Bumpy. \u00a0Ever heard of those?
