Amazing. Memorable. Fun!

by Cindy on May 4, 2009

This morning on the radio one “personality” said to the other, “Describe your weekend in 3 words…”  She answered, “Beyonce, rain, Target”.  I gave my weekend a little thought and decided mine was AMAZING, MEMORABLE, AND FUN!

How can I decribe how wonderful it was to be in a place where like minds came together and creativity was flowing without end?  Over the weekend, Lynn Davis described similar feelings in her post on Art Bead Scene after attending ArtFest a few weeks ago.  There were so many artists in one place, whose books I’ve read or whose techniques I’ve heard about……. Walking down the hall, I peeked in to see Susan Lenart-Kazmer with her students gathered around for a demo, right in the middle of the hallway there was Michael deMeng showing some newly created “deMented toys”, and right outside the glass wall I could see Richard Salley demonstrating with a torch.  This was a dream day!  I was only able to attend one workshop, but one lady I met was attending SIX!

Considering this was my first retreat, I wasn’t familiar with all of the traditions….for example the awesome trading that goes on!!  People would walk right up to one another and ask, “Do you have a trade?”  And they’d swap charms.  Apparently you bring a bunch of charms made up in any media to swap…I was generously given a few as an indoctrination. 🙂  Collaborating, sharing, asking for and giving suggestions…it was wonderful to see that going on all around.  This is an annual even that people make a point to return to.  The ladies at my table were from NY, PA, and NC.

I really enjoyed my class with Linda and Opie O’Brien.  They were witty, knowledgeable, and down to earth.  Some of the techniques in my workshop:  working with sheet metal, creating natural patinas, creating a riveted bezel, a copper pipe bezel, soldering, drilling stones and working with concrete (yes, concrete!).  Here is my work in progress:

I have to admit I work quite slow.  I like to “stew” over an idea, play with different layouts and beads…I just can’t be rushed.  My partner Maureen, on the other hand, just had a creative streak and was able to complete this beautiful necklace.  She even wore it out the door!

Here are my pendants at the end of class.  As you can see they were not finished, but I got straight to work on them back at home.

Almost finished!

The pendant on this first necklace was patinated, then hammered, stamped, layered with sewing paper tissue, then sealed with gel medium.   The resin piece you see in the concrete bezel is by Jade Scott.   The lampwork dangle is by Kim Typanski.  I named this piece “Imaginary Friend”…loved that figure stamp I borrowed from Maureen.  I had totally forgotten what I had stamped on the back – see the name fit perfectly!

My next necklace I titled simply, “Dream Catcher”.  Maybe you can see the resemblance too.  I traded some coiled copper links for that sweet piece of Murano glass chain with the birds along the side of the chain.  I tried something different here and used oxidized copper ball chain.  I wrapped the ends snug and created wrapped loops to secure the chain.  I made that disc you see in the blue concrete!  The other lampwork beads are by Moon Stumpp.

That’s about it for this show and tell.  As you can see, I’m excited about the whole experience and hope I can make this an annual retreat….although next year will be a challenge as they’ve moved it the weekend of my son’s birthday.  Wire Fest was this weekend as well and I can’t wait to hear about that event.  Nothing like learning new techniques to open a window of inspiration!

Set in Stone

by Cindy on May 1, 2009

This weekend I’m heading out of town to attend Art and Soul for the first time.  There are so many cool retreats and workshops going on around the country and I’m so thrilled there is one in my neck of the woods.  Alright, it will be quite a drive and I’ll be getting up around 4:00 a.m. to get there….but it will be worth it!  I’m all set for the “Set in Stone” workshop by Linda and Opie O’Brien.  I can’t wait to meet these artists….they just seem so interesting and generous with their knowledge.  I’m bringing my copy of Metal Craft Discovery Workshop for an autograph. 🙂

Have a great weekend!

Tagged!

by Cindy on April 30, 2009

Kerry over at KABS Concepts tagged me in a little question and answer session.  Please read on if you’d like to learn something new about little ole me….. 🙂

THE RULES:

Rules of the game: Respond and rework. Answer the questions on your own blog; replace one question that you dislike with a question of your own invention; add one more question of your own. Tag some friends to keep the flow going, let them know they’ve been tagged.

THE QUESTIONS:

What is your current obsession?  Wanting to branch out in to new design styles….utilizing vintage and electic pieces.  I’ve been collecting old rhinestone brooches and chain, religious medals and great old treasures recently.  Actually collecting “old” things is not a current obsession, it’s an ongoing obsession!

What flower are you most anxious to see bloom this spring?  Cherry blossoms, and they’ve already bloomed!

What is your biggest pet peeve?  I really dislike it when people cut in front of me in line.  You know when you’re waiting in line, then a new register opens?  Why people jump from behind me and rush to the new line without consideration (of me standing there with kids, clearly eager to check out as well) I’ll never know.  It is so much better when the clerk says, “Next in line?”.

What was the last thing you bought?  I bought a sweet print from the Etsy seller, Creative Thursday for a special upcoming birthday.

What are you listening to right now? The Fray by The Fray.  Can’t get enough by this band.  My husband says (along with Coldplay) that it is “suburban soccer Mom” music…but I disagree.  My kids don’t play soccer.  🙂

Favorite vacation spots?   We really don’t go on “vacation” these days with the kids and all….but we do get away to Ocean City a LOT.  We are grateful to stay at my parent’s place there that is on the bay side in a planned community…complete with kiddie beaches, indoor and outdoor pools, interactive water fountains, a grille, neighborhood events and an old-fashioned corner store.   We’ve been bringing the kids to OC since they were babies….now Nathaniel has visited this vacation hot spot too!

What are you reading right now?  Just bought the publication, “Where Women Create” yesterday and it’s more like enjoying all of the studio pictures rather than reading.

What four words would you use to describe yourself?  Stubborn (sometimes that’s good, sometimes that’s bad), thoughtful, observant, compassionate.

What is your current guilty pleasure?  Staying up late visiting my favorite blogs and Etsy…eating chocolate chip cookie dough.  This isn’t a new thing though….me and that cookie dough go way back!

Where are you planning to travel next?   It’s in state but still almost 3 hours away – Hampton, VA.  I am going to my first Art & Soul retreat!  I am so excited!!!  Look at this amazingly creative registration I received….yes, it’s a real old record that they used.  I know I am going to be so impressed by all of the artists there.

What was the best thing you ate or drank recently?   It would have to be the crab bisque I had at Philip’s over spring break.  Reminds me of the bisque my Grandmother used to make.

What are you most happy doing?  Sitting on the beach with a nice breeze, watching the kids play.  Celebrating the little things with my family.

What blog have you been following the longest?  And the most recent?  I’ve been following (no surprise!) KABS Creative Concepts since hmm…maybe 2006?  Was it earlier?  I found her through the early days on the Bead and Button forum…and we’ve become friends through the years. 🙂

Diane’s blog, Rosa & Josie’s,  is beautiful and I love how she chose her blog name!   She is such a sweet person and creates gorgeous jewelry (she’s the “cover girl” for the current Belle Armoire Jewelry magazine).

Care to share some wisdom?  It seems like things are busier than ever this year (hmm…wonder if a new baby has anything to do with it?), so I lately I am relying on practical words of wisdom.  Here’s a great one:    “You can’t stop the waves, but you can learn to surf” – Jon Kabat-Zinn.

I’m tagging these ladies whose blogs I enjoy and who I would like to get to know better…..

There are so many of you I’d love to learn more about…who knows, this may come around full circle to you next.
