The Thrill of the Hunt {Beads and Beyond}

Time is flying faster than ever it seems.  Maybe its the deadlines.  Maybe it’s simply juggling life in between each night of homework.  By the time I post this, it will be Tuesday and I still haven’t told you about Friday!    This past weekend I went to the big Gem and Jewelry show that comes to the Dulles Expo Center 4 times a year.  This time I had a great time attending the show with Jeanette.  There was something special about this time around, because it was one of those instances when my online jewelry world merged with my in-person world (if that makes sense).  We met a fellow jewelry designer who I’ve recently had the pleasure of “meeting” through our blogs.  Tracy Statler lives within an hour from me and as it turns out we have so much in common. I really felt like I clicked with her right away and hope to meet up again one day soon.  The only down side to the gem show was just how little silver one can get for their dollar these days with the sterling silver spot price at an all time high.  The above picture represents over $150.00 (and that’s shopping from the wholesale area).

With the older boys skiing with their Grandparents,  we packed up our youngest son and our pup and headed on a quick trip to the Antiques Capital in PA – my new #1 absolute favorite antiquing destination.  We stopped in Emmitsburg, MD on the way and visited the National Shrine of Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton.  There’s a special place in my heart here as this is the town where my Grandmother was born.    It had to be the windiest day of the year, even one of the metal park benches had blown over.  Despite the cold, we were determined to visit the shrine and learn more about this remarkable woman, the first American-born citizen to be canonized.  She is the founder of the Sisters of Charity.  Widowed by the age of 30 with 5 young children, it is truly a wonder and inspiration to read all that she accomplished in her 46 years.

We were up by 6:00 a.m. on Sunday morning to hit this gigantic antique mall (so large that yes, my husband got lost and could not find me….I had to call him twice on his cell phone to give him location markers!),   There were tables set up outside too in the freezing cold – apparently people are known to be there by 4:30 a.m. with their flashlights.  I’d like to visit again once it’s warm  – that’s going on my virtual calendar for the Spring.

You may know I’m crazy about collecting Scottie this and Scottie that…  I’ve never seen one of these Black and White style jack-in-the-boxes before.

This next picture is something that I’ve been on the look-out for recently – antique spool cabinets.    You may know these can be hard to find and very pricey, but something about these general store table top displays really appeal to me.  My beads would be stashed in style in a case like this!  I apologize for the blurry picture – the lighting was awful in this area inside the building.  This Willimantic 6-drawer case was bought at an auction in NY and was saved from a rat-infested building, so I was told by the dealer. I would love to save it personally, but it was $3,300!  Notice the beautiful leather detail on the sides and hardware – everything is original and even signed by the cabinet maker in one of the drawers.

This dealer had more antique hardward than I have ever seen!  You name it, he had it.  I selected a few pieces that I thought would work well for future jewelry designs –

My husband found this sweet pin – truly the deal of the day at just $2.00.  He was proud to earn Brownie Points for this one –

A few more favorites …… these 100-year-old ribbons.   I described my interest in these old sequin-studded and old bullion-trimmed pieces in this post.  Imagine attending a gathering or convention today.   Our modern plastic name badges cannot compare to the attention to detail displayed in these ornate ribbons!    Just look how incredible – the ribbons are reversible and just as pretty on the back side, a surprising all-black look.

With finds like these, is there any doubt why I keep going back for more?

Thank you for joining me in this Show and Tell segment.  🙂 I appreciate your visit!

That is just so cool. To meet fellow bloggers while shopping for beads is the BEST! And to have a husband that shares your love and goes shopping with you… well, it doesn’t get much better than that. Too bad there won’t be a bead show or antiques festival in DC area on March 11Th! I would be with you there in a heartbeat! Enjoy the day. Erin

Some gorgeous finds there Cindy, can’t believe that little scottie dog brooch was only $2.00! Bargain. Shame about the antique spool cabinet., who knows, you might find a good priced one, one day.

Oh – I soooo hear you on that spool cabinet!!! I have been lusting after one myself – but they are out of my range here too (though I haven’t seen any that are quite that fantastic).
Next weekend the big flea market will be back – I can hardly wait.

Stefanie February 22, 2011 at 5:19 am

Ahh, to go treasure hunting with a friend is the best thing ever. Great finds!

Those scotties are too cute!!! Isn’t it cute when the hubbers finds something like that? Looks like a great time. I feel your pain with the silver. I recently bought a few connectors and jumprings – spent about 53.00 and got the teeniest bag in the mail – it was like going to the store for a turkey and coming back with a capon chicken : (

Ray and I love Renninger’s and going to Adamstown! We usually try to get up there for the fall extravaganza and visit the Renninger’s in Kutztown and also go to Shupps Grove. You would love both. The spool cabinet was wonderful, there’s a booth inside with lots of antique store counters and displays that i love to look at, can’t afford any of it though! We always have to use our cell phones to find one another too! Glad you had a fun trip.

Good finds. Love the dog pin.

Wow! I need to go to this antique/flea market to hunt for some kewl bargains too. I didn’t know you collected Scottie stuff…me too! Or at least I use to. It has to be pretty special for me to buy it. That could be because my house at one point was actually decorated “Scottie style”. We started to De-Scottie the house about 5 years ago & only have one intact Scottie room, but I do have some things here & there. Nice to met another Scottie collector. You’ve made me want to do some weekly “sharing” of my obsession!

That was fun and it was almost like shopping with you. He did good with that find for sure!

Deryn Mentock February 22, 2011 at 9:31 am

What divine treasures! I was surprised to see, on your ribbons, the hands-shaking part of the pin…I just purchased some of these, myself! Mine are minus the ribbons but don’t you just love the hands? You’re right, Cindy, the detail is amazing…makes me wish I had the rest of the ribbon!

kim February 22, 2011 at 9:46 am

I would say you had quite the time shopping and meeting new friends. I am ready for winter to give way to the spring flea markets here….hurry up spring! The little pin is quite wonderful! Way to go hubby.

Looks fantastic. I really missed you this time.

Lisa February 22, 2011 at 12:31 pm

A productive weekend for sure! Love the hardware you chose and cannot wait to see what you create with it! Have fun! Oh, and your husband’s find is adorable!

Beth Bricker February 22, 2011 at 1:42 pm

Cindy,
Awesome stuff! Love the Scottie dog pin, did you buy the jack in the box ? I also love the ribbons. I have a friend in Ohio that collects these ribbons. Everything you posted is wonderful. However I really love the wood drawers the hardware is in although I suppose those weren’t for sale. Great post!

I had sent you an e-mail about the Gem & Mineral Show – I am a week off!!! But from what you said – it seems worth the drive to go. Guess I will have to catch it next time. Love your antique finds. My sister collects Scotties too and you should see some of the fun things I have picked up for her!

Linda Sinish February 22, 2011 at 4:02 pm

Cindy, I want those silver leaf charms! Thank you for taking me on your trip to the Expo. There are some disadvantages to living here in the mountains – Not being able to zip over to the Expo is third to being able to see you and Jeanette. Hugs to you. I can’t wait to see what you create with those leaf charms. Hmm, I guess I should schedule a pilgrimage this spring/summer. – Linda

Love your treasures, especially the hardware pieces. Wonderful to pair with old crystals and pearls.
And the price of silver!….I’m hoarding my .40/gram stash.
Another show and tell success! Thanks for sharing.

Shelby February 22, 2011 at 9:08 pm

So many wonderful treasures! Looks like a ton of fun. We like to go treasure hunting too, but usually we only have time in the summer.
I agree, time is flying by…I don’t even know where the days go.

Melissa M February 22, 2011 at 9:32 pm

you always find the coolest pieces! I would love to go with you sometime when you are up my way!

Virginie February 23, 2011 at 4:27 am

I love antiques, I wish there’d be more markets and fairs here in the south of Ireland. I love your pictures, I was wondering the other day what sort of camera you have. I’m looking into buying a new one as the one I have drains the batteries in a flash and is just not up to scratch anyways. Kinda explains why I get frustrated with taking pictures at the moment lol. Looking forward to your BSP piece, exciting! smile, Virginie

a fellow lover of all things Scottie dog! Wow – your hubby has an eye for the beautiful SD! How lucky your are! We have two Trash to Treasure sales a year at our farm so we are avid antique and garage salers! I admire your jewelry design! Thanks for stopping by my blog!

Rebecca Anderson February 24, 2011 at 6:02 pm

Gorgeous finds Cindy! And that spool cabinet…one day! Beautiful. Thanks for your comment t he other day on my blog – it’s so amazing to think of you, so very far away, looking at my designs…an honour in fact. Hope you’re having a lovely week!

Christine Damm February 25, 2011 at 7:51 am

Wow, there is so much to comment on! The Scottie pin– fabulous! I have been thinking about ribbons lately– I’ll e-mail you about that. As far as spool cabinets go, that one is the best I’ve ever seen but you’d better come to Vermont for better deals than that! I’ll keep my eyes peeled for one for you. I saw some display items for sale on Etsy that utilize antique drawers and I know a local guy who probably has some. Maybe I can trade you for that one piece of hardware with the fan-shaped tail and the holes at both ends. What a piece! Thanks for sharing the bounty.
